Summary

Updating firmware is a simple process, however there are some things to be aware of.   XT, XT and IQ systems update via firmware package files placed on a card in the back.  iXG Cameras, DF/DF+ Cameras and P/P+ series Digital Backs require a Universal updater program.

In-Depth

For XF Camera systems, XT Camera Systems, and IQ Digital Backs:
1.  Download the latest firmware package HERE

  • Firmware Packages (.fwp files) contain firmware for multiple products.  Pay attention to the description on the download page some packages may only contain IQ4 firmware, while other may contain both IQ4 and IQ1/2/3 firmware.  Select the most recent package for your product.
  • Digital backs with different mount plates, such as Hasselblad of Contax use the same firmware files as Phase One XF mount backs.  You will still download the most recent XF Camera system firmware package that supports your digital back variant (IQ1/2/3 etc.).

2.  If zipped, unzip the .FWP file.  Place it on the root level of a CF or XQD card. Place the card in the back.

3.  Prepare the camera system for update:

  • XF Camera system: Be sure that the Prism and back are attached and batteries in both back and body are full.
  • XT Camera system: Be sure an XT lens is attached and that the battery in the back is full.
  • Digital back only: Remove the back from any 3rd party camera body and place the cover pate on the back.  Be sure the battery is full.

4.  Select "Update Firmware" from the Firmware menu:

  • IQ4 backs: Menu > System Settings > Firmware > Update Firmware.
  • IQ1/2/3/ backs: Menu > Firmware > Update Firmware.

5.  Allow the full update to complete.  The body will be updated first if attached. The back will restart automatically at the end.

  • IQ4 backs may remain with a black screen for several minutes after the main update in order to reprogram the main electronics.  When this occurs There will be a purple/white light visible if you open the XQD door.   Be patient as long as this light is illuminated even if the indicator lights below the LCD screen turn off.

6.  If you are updating an XT Camera System and you have multiple XT lenses, run steps 3-5 again with each lens attached.

  • This ensures the lens firmware is up to date as well.

For iXG Cameras, P/P+ backs, DF/DF+ Cameras:
1.  Download the latest firmware installer software HERE

2.  Install the Firmware updater.

3.  Be sure Capture One is closed

4.  Prepare the camera or back:

  • iXG: Insert power cable and connect a USB 3.0 cable between the camera and computer.
  • P/P+ back: Remove from any camera body and place the cover plate on the back.
    1. Insert a fully charged battery and make sure Menu > Configuration > Power Source is set to Battery.
    2. The back MUST be connected to a native FireWire port on the computer.  DO NOT attempt to use thunderbolt adapter or Thunderbolt/USB-C dock!  Connecting via such an adapter will cause the firmware update to fail.
  • DF/DF+ bodies: You will need a V-Grip Air and a mini USB cable to complete any firmware updates.
    • Write down the Serial Number of the body.  You will need to enter the serial number into the Firmware update software in order to update firmware.  (Starts with PX or PJ)
    • Make sure the service switch on the V-grip is in the "Normal" Position.

  • Connect the V-grip to the body and turn on the camera.  Make sure the battery is full.
  • Connect a USB cable to the port inside the battery door of the V-Grip.

5.  Open the Firmware updater, the camera/back should appear in the side bar.

6.  The latest firmware available should be selected in the drop down list.  If a Download button appears below it, click Download.

  • If you have been given a specific firmware file not listed in the drop down, drag the firmware file onto the firmware updater.

7.  Click Update.
