Instructions for Schneider - Kreuznach USB control for Phase One Digital Backs

In-Depth

Phase One and Schneider Kreuznach have worked together to provide a seamless integration of the Schneider electronic shutter system into the Phase One workflow. Using Capture One alongside Schneider Shutter Control software allows you to select the desired aperture and shutter speed from your computer and also to open and close the lens for live view, whole still being able to trigger the camera from Capture One.

The system package contains:

• Schneider USB shutter control box
• Schneider USB cable
• Phase One Cable solution
• Schmitt cable for signal optimization
• This instruction note #80710700

To be able to utillize the Schneider USB control solution with Phase One digital backs you must have the following:

• A Phase One digital back
• A Schneider electronic shutter and lens

Before setting up the system please check that you have the following items in place:

Phase One IQ2 and IQ3 digital backs (Schneider solution is NOT compatible with IQ4)

The following components must be ordered: #71394000 Schneider USB controller solution

Shutter latency settings on IQ2 and IQ3

The shutter latency on the IQ digital back should be Set to "Normal"

(Menu > Shutter Latency > Normal)

Phase One IQ1 and P+ Digital Backs

The following components must be ordered: # 71394000 Schneider USB controller solution and #50300181 Schmitt cable

The Schmitt cable was made to optimize the trigger signal when working with older digital backs, including the first series of IQ1 backs, for configurations with both mechanical shutters and with electronic shutters. The Schmitt cable’s functionality has been integrated into the IQ2 and IQ3 digital backs.

Shutter latency settings on IQ1

The shutter latency on the IQ digital back should be Set to "Normal"

(Menu > Shutter Latency > Normal)

Phase One P+ Digital back firmware and settings:

NOTE: 2 packages are avaliable from Phase One:
1) Itemnumber 71394000 is the full solution with USB controller and all cables (71395000)  included.
2) Itemnumber 71395000 is only the cables - called Schneider Phase One Integration Package

NOTE: AC adapter is needed for the USB controller. This AC adapter (not displayed!) (item no. 03-1017971 ) can be ordered from a Phase One/Schneider Reseller. http://www.schneideroptics.com

The full system solution (71394000) contains:
• Schneider USB shutter control box
• Schneider USB cable
• Phase One Cable solution
• Schneider Sofware CD
• Phase One firmware updater CD

The Phase One Integration Package (71395000) contains:
1) The new improved Multiconnector cable with build-in camera interface addapter.
2) Extension multi connector cable
3) PDF and CD-rom.

Digital back firmware needed:

Camera back firmware needs to be version 3.2.6 or later - the Phase One firmware updater can be downloaded from the Phase One Support page:

https://www.phaseone.com/en/Downloads/Materials/Camera-Firmware/FirmwareUpdater

After installing the new firmware (version 3.2.6 or later), a new “Camera Mode” menu is available from the “Configuration” menu.

• Normal (default)
• Mode 1 (Schneider electronic shutter option)
• Mode 2 (Aerial application)
• Mode 3 (Industrial - available only on Hasselblad V version)

With the Schneider USB control set this menu to “Mode 1”

Note: Phase One P+ backs for Hasselblad V can be used without setting this option, and therefore also does not need Firmware 3.2.6 to work. It is still recommended to update, as this firmware also have a few other corrections to improve stability.

Note - Back working as 1 or 2 shooter!
Using P 65+ and P 40+ as 1-shot, zero latency must be selected. However we strongly recommend to use normal latency in order to prevent overheating of the back where image degration can occur. Normal latency will operate the back as 2-shooter
Using all other P+ backs and older Phase One backs - the camera back will only work as 2-shooter.
More info about optimal image quality and latency in the link below.

Software installation:

Download the latest Schneider software from Schneider Kreuznach's website. After installing the PC or Mac software, launch the two software packages (Capture One and Schneider shutter control).

Shutter control needed:
A Schneider shutter control ES. Remote Shutter Control ES is part number 03-1001654 this can be ordered from a Schneider reseller. http://www.schneideroptics.com If you want the power supply for this controller the part number is 03-1001656 and can be ordered from a Schneider Reseller.

** Please note that the AC power supply for the Remote Shutter Control ONLY comes with the German type plug - you will need to purchase a US conversion adapter from Radio Shack or somewhere like that.

Operating the Phase One and Schneider Kreuznach solution:

1. To have the USB box take control over the lens click on Select Lens in the Shutter Control Window

2. When you set the Schneider Shutter Control in "external release" You can trigger the digital back from Capture One.

You can toggle between the two applications and set the Schneider shutter control software as a floating palette by minimizing its window and keeping all the lens controls available:
